WORK FORCE DIVERSITY
What
is Workforce Diversity?
In
simple terms, it refers to a diverse organisation with a heterogeneous workforce.
The concept of workforce diversity has evolved over the years as organisations
have become more global and inclusive. In the past, workforce diversity was
often thought of in terms of gender and race. However, today, the definition of
workforce diversity has expanded to include a wide range of dimensions,
including but not limited to gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation,
religion, socio-economic status, ability, and skills
Types
of Workforce Diversity
The types of diversity that can exist inside a
social construct are potentially endless. It includes every characteristic and
trait that exists in a group of people. However, there are six major types of
diversity that we can typically observe in the workplace.
1. Race and ethnicity
When it comes to workplace
diversity, race and ethnicity are the most important factors. A person's
physiological identity is determined by their race, which encompasses physical
traits like skin colour and hair type. However, a person's cultural upbringing
is the main focus of ethnicity. It encompasses a wide range of racial or ethnic
identities. It focuses more on geography or cultural history than biology.
2. Age group
There are people of all ages in
every organisation. Each age group has unique characteristics based on the year
of birth and the specific social, political, and economic events that took
place during the individual's formative years.
These disparities may give rise to ageism and provide challenges at work. It in
the workplace is the propensity to negatively assess someone based only on
their age.
3. Gender Identity
Based on biological sex, gender
roles are social constructs that differ from nation to nation. At birth, they
are assigned a name. When a child is given a gender, the male and female gender
binaries are established. In addition to these straightforward binary choices,
a range of gender identities may or may not correspond with the sex assigned at
birth.
 Examples of common non-binary gender
identities include demi gender, non-binary, transgender, gender queer, and
gender fluid. Other non-binary identities do exist, though. Furthermore, there
are several gender identities, including a gender, non-gendered, gender less,
and gender-free. It's courteous to inquire about someone's preferred pronouns
since you should keep in mind that people may identify differently from how you
see them.
4. Physical Abilities
and Disabilities
Your
team will become more inclusive and varied as a result of hiring people with a
range of impairments and life experiences. To assist your company, reach a
wider range of consumers and clients, the team will also introduce new
viewpoints and ideas. People frequently believe that a disability has to do
with their physical mobility. Employees, however, may have a range of
impairments that impair their eyesight, cognition, and other processes. You
must make accommodations for those with disabilities who can be equally as
productive as their coworkers if you wish to promote diversity.
Challenges of Diversity in The Workplace
1. Language
& Communication Barriers
2.  Discrimination
Risks
3. Cultural Misunderstandings
4. Potential
for Conflict
5. Gender Equality

Conclusion
Implementing
diversity in the workplace does have its challenges. However, you can overcome
most of these challenges, which are less significant than the benefits of
inclusion and diversity. So, ensure that your business actively promotes
diversity and inclusion in the workplace from the beginning.
